Job Description
Job Summary We are seeking an experienced, detail-oriented, and high-energy Carrier Sales Representative specializing in Open Deck, Flatbed, and Heavy Haul freight. Unlike transactional dry van procurement, this role requires a deep technical understanding of specialized equipment, state permit regulations, escort requirements, and precise load securement.
In this position, you will be responsible for building a network of qualified open-deck carriers, procuring specialized capacity, negotiating competitive rates, and ensuring the seamless execution of complex, high-value, and over-dimensional (OD) shipments.
Key Responsibilities Capacity Procurement & Network Building
- Source & Vet Specialized Carriers: Actively recruit, vet, and onboard quality flatbed, step-deck, RGN (removable gooseneck), double drop, and multi-axle heavy haul carriers.
- Build Relationships: Develop long-term, strategic partnerships with specialized owner-operators and fleets to secure dedicated capacity.
- Market Intelligence: Monitor open-deck capacity trends, seasonal equipment availability, and regional rate fluctuations to make data-driven buying decisions.
Rate Negotiation & Pricing Strategy
- Spot & Contract Rate Negotiation: Negotiate competitive truckload rates with carriers to meet customer delivery expectations while maximizing gross profit margins.
- Quote Assistance: Collaborate with the Account Management and Customer Sales teams to provide accurate spot quotes and bidding support for complex or over-dimensional freight.
Shipment Execution & Compliance Management
- Permit & Route Verification: Ensure carriers possess proper state/provincial permits, route surveys, and bridge analysis approvals for over-dimensional/overweight loads.
- Escort & Safety Coordination: Coordinate pilot cars/escorts, bucket truck line-crews, and police escorts where mandated by law.
- Securement Verification: Verify that drivers have the necessary equipment (tarping, chains, binders, coil racks, edge protectors) and conform to DOT load securement requirements.
- Exception Management: Proactively track loads from origin to destination, managing delays, breakdowns, and port/job site appointment constraints to ensure on-time delivery.
